The role, Packaging Development Manager
We are looking for an experienced and proactive Packaging Development Manager, to co-ordinate and control packaging development across EPD, NPD, cost-engineering and innovation projects. To achieve business product launch timing, commercial objectives and deliver visibility of sector innovation and category trends.
The ever increasing and complex packaging portfolio requires the Packaging Development Manager to work closely withinternal and external stakeholders, leading and supporting with project briefs and recommendations.
The role heavily encompasses food manufacturing and the candidate will be a key driver, and be responsible for providing packaging solutions to meet business objectives, both commercial and brand focused.

What you will be responsible for...

  • Managing packaging development across EPD, NPD and cost-engineering and researching sector innovation.
  • Lead, define, develop and support from concept brief to commercialisation on department and business projects within agreed timescales.
  • Generation of supplier briefs for business packaging requirements and facilitate relevant supplier meetings.
  • Managing and approving technical drawings, tooling requirements and print specifications.
  • Developing and maintaining accurate packaging specifications, ensuring that they are validated.
  • Ensure packaging is fit for purpose for the intended distribution channel through full risk assessment analysis, robust testing and trials.
  • Supporting artwork/repro processes, following approval processes and associated system adjustments.
  • Identify cost saving opportunities for the business and undertake cost-engineering exercises alongside the Packaging Technologist and Packaging Buyer.
  • Visit incumbent suppliers and new supply options to drive completion of projects, objectives and trials.
  • Manage product non-conformances and implement desired quality standards with suppliers.
  • Manage, develop and support the packaging development technologist.
  • Attend relevant packaging trade shows to research and investigate sector capability, trends and innovation.

What we’re looking for in you...

  • Ideally 5 years packaging development experience and leadership responsibility involving project management from concept generation through to commercialisation, design and innovation.
  • Extensive knowledge from within Food, Food Retail or FMCG sectors.
  • Preferably educated to degree level in a relevant food and or packaging related subject.
  • Excellent knowledge desirable across rigid and flexible plastics, carton board and corrugated categories.
  • A demonstrable history of the ability to research materials, source, cost-engineer and select supply partners.
  • Knowledge and experience of working with machinery and processes: printing - flexo/litho/digital, thermo-forming, extruding and carton-folding.
  • Provide technical packaging expertise to support the factory and business projects.
  • Previous direct line management responsibility.

  • Comfortable working across the Microsoft Office suite (particularly Excel) with strong presentation skills.

  • Lead the business in the early stages of any future development and innovation inquiries.
